Sheikh Khalil Al-Hosary (1917–1980) was an Egyptian Qur’an reciter and one of the most renowned Qaris (reciters) of his time. Born in Egypt, he memorized the Qur’an by the age of 8. He pursued formal Islamic studies at Al-Azhar University and later joined the Radio of Egypt as a certified Qari in 1944, where his recitations gained immense popularity.
Sheikh Al-Hosary was known for his meticulous application of tajweed (the set of rules for proper pronunciation and recitation of the Qur’an). His style of recitation is characterized by its clarity, precise articulation, and slow, deliberate pace, which allowed listeners to reflect on the meaning of the verses. He was also pivotal in reviving interest in tajweed, and his recordings are still used as teaching references around the world.
Sheikh Al-Hosary became the first Qari to record the entire Qur’an in a variety of recitation styles (qira’at), including Hafs ‘an Asim, Warsh, and Qalun. His contributions to the science of Qur’anic recitation earned him numerous accolades throughout his career, including the title of “The Best Voice in Reciting the Qur’an” from various international organizations. He was awarded honors from several countries, including Egypt, where he was celebrated for his dedication to preserving and spreading the art of Qur’anic recitation.
Beyond his recitation, Sheikh Al-Hosary also authored several works on tajweed, helping to codify and teach the rules of Qur’anic recitation to future generations. His legacy continues to influence and inspire Qur’an reciters across the globe.
